Where the hand drawings and the sign data come from. All of it is provisional, pending review by a Deaf consultant.
Reference hand drawings
The hand drawings in the alphabet, the letter sheets and the drill’s reference card come from the Gallaudet ASL alphabet chart on Wikimedia Commons, laid out by Darren Stone (Ds13) from David Rakowski’s 1991 Gallaudet-TT font and released into the public domain. Vectorised by Marnanel. FingerSprint split the chart into one drawing per letter and recolored it to match the page.
Hand skeleton drawings
The line drawings of hands in the landing demo, the Photo Finish, the share card and the J and Z letter sheets are rendered from hand landmark poses measured on photos in the ASL-HG dataset, licensed CC BY 4.0. The landmarks were extracted with Google’s MediaPipe hand landmarker; the drawings are FingerSprint’s own rendering of those points.
Pictograms and strokes
The thumb-position pictogram for A (shown while the drawing loads), the dashed J and Z guide over the camera and the J and Z stroke paths in the letter sheets are drawn by FingerSprint.
Words beta: PopSign ASL
Words beta is built on PopSign ASL v1.0, Georgia Tech and DPAN (the Deaf Professional Arts Network), licensed CC BY 4.0: recordings of Deaf signers signing everyday words into a phone. FingerSprint derived two things from it:
- The sign model’s weights. Hand and body landmarks were measured on the recordings with Google’s MediaPipe, and FingerSprint trained its own small sign model on those landmarks. No video ships with the app.
- The reference replays. Each sign’s looping figure redraws the landmarks of one PopSign recording (the head from the face points, the shoulders, the signing arm and hand), smoothed and resampled. They show landmarks only, never video or images of the signer.
The written description of each sign is FingerSprint’s own. The replays and descriptions show one one-handed form of each sign; regional and two-handed forms exist. All of it is pending review by a Deaf consultant.
